For merge visible you ‘ve got everything right except that after creating and selecting the new layer, hold down the option (alt) key and select merge visible layers option. Using the option (alt) key will leave the current visible layers in tact. Unsharp masking is the sharpening filter of choice in Photoshop. Overall image sharpening is the last step before printing. Start with radius values between 0.9-1.1, threshhold between 0-3, and amount 40%-80%. OK Paul!
