Kanazawa

October, 2000

Kanazawa is the capital of Ishikawa ken. This area of Japan was ruled by the Maeda family for three centuries from 1583 'til the Meiji restoration in 1869 which ended the feudal era. I lived here for 6 weeks this past summer.

This permanent street market is open daily and is located in the Kanazawa City Center. For quick calculations use 100 Japanese yen = 1 US dollar. Food is not cheap! Actually everything is Japan is quite pricey.

Here are some people shots. There are a few photo's of my friend, Itaya Kanshiro teaching me about shodo (Japanese calligraphy), Yuko Hoshino doing Tai Chi, Toru and his staff at the Mero Mero Pochi Restaurant where I often ate, some shots at Tengen a local Go Club, and check out the Harley Davidson dude.

From sand sculptures to chimpanzees, from a secluded beach where we went skinny dipping to a mountain stream at Nata Dera, from contemplative ponds to a straw thatched village, these are some of the sites I saw.

This gallery has images at a popular "English" blues bar and a Yakatori restaurant. The Hyakumangoku festival and the geisha district are included, as well as a shot of a Japanese Elvis Rock "street dance ensemble."

Kanazawa is rich with temples. Here are shots from Diajo ji, Souji ji, and Nata Dera. At one temple I found a piece of string in a puddle that I call, "Lady with Fiddle."

Sculpture by Tamura

July, 2000

Tamura-san is a Japanese sculptor extraordinaire. I was invited to his mountaintop for a scrumptious barbecue and shot these images in the day's fading light. Most of this work is in stone. However, his newest works, one of which you will see in silhouette, are stainless steel kinetic art.

Ushutsu Abare

July, 2000

Ushutsu, Japan is a small fishing town on the Noto Peninsula. The yearly Abare Festival celebrates Japanese strength, courage and determination. The Kureko (floats) contain small children, a drummer, and a flutist who must be carried and protected from fire and other dangers by the men. Its a totally outrageous spectacle.

Hanibe Gankutsu-in

July, 2000

Hanibe Gankutsu-in is a little known but truly awesome sculpture collection in Komatsu, Japan. Most of the statuary in housed in a giant cave in the side of a mountain. The newest section depicts man's decent into hell.

Kyoto - Holy Harmony

June, 2000

Kyoto, Japan. City of Holy Harmony or "Wa." I was taken by the integration of gardens and rice fields within the urban landscape. The many ancient temples and shrines pay hommage to Buddhism and Shintoism.

KIT

June, 2000

This is a documentary of the RIT students attending the Kanazawa Institute of Technology Program in Japanese for Science and Technology 2000.

KIT helps IJST graduates celebrate the completion of the program with multimedia introductions of each graduate, great food, and games.

Kim and I took this panorama from the top of our dorm, Ishikowa Heights. Quicktime is needed to view this file.

A collection of other KIT photos.
